We were discussing “Basic Principle of grinding” in our previous post, where we have discussed the fundamentals of grinding process, abrasives materials and various factors affecting the work piece surface created by grinding process.
Today we will continue with the classifications of grinding process, applications of grinding process and finally we will see the advantage of grinding process. So let us see the various classifications of grinding process.
There are mostly four types of grinding processes used in industries and these are as mentioned here, we will discuss each type of grinding process in details here.
Cylindrical grinding
Cylindrical grinding process is used to shape the outer surface of a workpiece. Cylindrical grinding process is mostly used to grind the surface of cylindrical object. Object will rotate around one axis and the surfaces of object which need to be grinded will be in concentric with that axis around which workpiece will rotate. Following figure shows the cylindrical grinding.
Cylindrical grinder will have one wheelhead attached with spindle and motor and this wheelhead will move to and from object with the help of cross slide. Tailstock and headstock will hold the object and object will rotate between headstock and tailstock.

Inside diameter grinding
Inside diameter grinding, also called as internal grinding, is used for grinding the inner diameter of tubular object. Workpiece or object will have already drilled hole and internal grinding process will be performed to finish the inner surface of workpiece with the help of small grinding wheel rotating at higher revolution per minute. Internal grinding process is displayed in following figure.
Workpiece will be hold in 3 jaw or 4 jaw chuck and workpiece will rotate by rotating motion of chuck. Internal grinder wheel will be attached with internal grinder spindle. Internal grinder will have rotating motion and will also have transverse motion to grind the internal surface of workpiece thoroughly.
Centerless grinding
Centerless grinding, as shown in figure, will be performed by locating the workpiece between one grinding wheel and one regulating wheel. Workpiece will be supported with the help of one guide or stop as shown in figure. There are three basic types of centerless grinding process as mentioned below.
