The Difference Between Blanchard Grinding & Precision Grinding

New to Blanchard and Precision Grinding. Here are the key differences.

According to Near Say Dayton:

“Grinding is a process used in machining that can quickly bring any material to its desired dimensions and surface. There are many types of grinding available, each using a different abrasive and technique…

Blanchard Grinding vs. Precision Grinding

Blanchard Grinding

“Blanchard grinding is one of the oldest forms of mechanical grinding, developed by the Blanchard Machine Company in the 1900s. It’s a very efficient way to remove large portions of material. Because it works best on pieces with a large surface area, it’s typically only used for very large pieces with a tolerance over 0.001 inches, such as large castings, forgings, sections of plate stock, stampings, molds, and dies.

“During grinding, large ferrous materials are held in place with magnets, but there are alternative holding devices that enable the process to be used on any large material. Blanchard grinding leaves a cross-hatch pattern characteristic of this particular method, which many find aesthetically pleasing.

Precision Grinding

“As its name suggests, precision grinding is used for materials that require a high degree of flatness, parallelism, or finish. It’s often used to make a brand-new part meet factory specifications, or to make repairs on used parts. Materials that need precision grinding are often coated to create a superior finish.

“There are several types of precision grinding. Horizontal spindle surface grinding uses an abrasive wheel rotating at very high speeds to grind flat surfaces. For round objects, cylindrical grinding employs a similar technique but for curved surfaces. Centerless grinding, internal diameter grinding, and creep-feed grinding are also precision methods…”
