The Principles Behind Efficient Centerless Grinding Operations

As explained by Henan More Super Hard Products Co. in their article, “Centerless Grinding Principle”, centerless grinding is a precision process used to produce smooth, round surfaces on cylindrical workpieces. This process relies on a high-speed grinding wheel and a slower regulating wheel, which together drive the workpiece’s rotation and guide its feed. By ensuring the workpiece center is elevated above the centerline of the grinding and regulating wheels, centerless grinding avoids symmetrical contact, allowing imperfections to be gradually ground away.

Through-grinding achieves axial feed by adjusting the angle of the regulating wheel’s axis, while radial feed is accomplished during in-feed grinding by moving the grinding or regulating wheel frame. This unique setup ensures consistent shaping and precision, even on complex workpieces.

Key to the process is the interplay between the grinding wheel, which rotates at a speed of approximately 35m/s, and the regulating wheel, which moves more slowly (10–50m/min). The regulating wheel controls the workpiece’s rotation and linear speed, aligning it with the desired grinding speed for optimal results.
