The Centerless Grinding Process Explained

As explained by Fine MetalWorking in “What Is Centerless Grinding? How Does It Work?” centerless grinding removes material by passing the workpiece between a grinding wheel and a regulating wheel while supported on a blade. The regulating wheel controls the rotation and feed rate of the part, while the grinding wheel performs the cutting action. This method allows for consistent grinding along the entire length of the workpiece.

Centerless grinding supports through-feed, in-feed, and end-feed operations depending on part geometry and production needs. The process is valued for its ability to achieve high accuracy, smooth surface finishes, and efficient production cycles. Proper wheel selection, alignment, and process control help maintain repeatability and reduce variation in finished parts.
