As reported by Modern Machine Shop in their article “When Grinding Is Like Turning,” high-speed machining using CNC milling machines involves fast, light cuts at high spindle speeds to achieve higher material removal rates. Similarly, peel grinding aims to achieve high material removal rates for cylindrical parts requiring outside-diameter (OD) grinding. Unlike traditional milling, peel grinding uses fast grinding wheel speeds with relatively deep passes, enabled by a very thin wheel that imparts low grinding forces on the workpiece. This process allows for grinding wheel peripheral speeds in the 80 to 180 m/sec range, significantly higher than the typical 40 to 50 m/sec speeds of conventional cylindrical grinding operations.
Peel grinding operations resemble single-point turning on a lathe, as the grinding wheel moves in the X and Z axes to grind contours, different diameters, and other features on a workpiece. When combined with advanced grinding wheel technology and high-pressure straight-oil coolant delivery, these high speeds enhance material removal rates for challenging materials such as carbide, ceramic, polycrystalline diamond, and even glass.
Complete Grinding Solutions, located in Springboro, Ohio, exemplifies the benefits of high-speed peel grinding. The company’s president, Beat Maurer, and vice president, Raphael Obrecht, both of whom have extensive experience with Swiss grinding machine OEM Studer, founded the company in 2005. In 2013, the company moved to a new 9,600 square-foot temperature-controlled facility equipped with seven Studer grinding machines. These machines allow for a variety of grinding operations, including ID/OD grinding, internal grinding of complex shapes, thread grinding, and out-of-round grinding.
As a job shop, Complete Grinding Solutions handles a wide range of grinding work in small batches for customers across numerous industries, including aerospace, automotive, computer, medical, oil/mining, plastic injection molding, renewable energy, and tool and die. The use of high-speed peel grinding has extended the flexibility of the company’s universal CNC grinding machines, enabling improved material removal rates and enhancing the overall efficiency and capability of their grinding operations.
