How ECG Combines Machining and Grinding Power

As described by The Engineering Choice in the article “What is Electrochemical Grinding and How it’s done?”, electrochemical grinding (ECG) is a hybrid manufacturing process that combines the precision of mechanical grinding with the efficiency of electrochemical machining. This dual-action approach allows for the removal of tough, electrically conductive materials with minimal mechanical stress.

In ECG, a negatively charged abrasive grinding wheel works in tandem with a positively charged workpiece, while an electrolyte fluid carries away the removed material. Unlike traditional grinding, the wheel in ECG doesn’t simply cut the material through contact; instead, it also promotes an electrochemical reaction. This reaction helps decompose the material at the surface level, softening it and allowing the abrasive wheel to perform its cutting action with significantly lower force.
